Bank of India is an Indian Government Undertaking organization with over 5000 branches in India and 60 international branches. Its origin dates back to 1906 when it was established by a group of renowned businessmen from Mumbai with an authorized capital of Rs.10 million further divided into 100,000 shares of Rs.100 each. Shri G. Padmanabhan is the current Non-executive Chairman of the bank. It is one of the top 5 banks in India that got nationalized in 1969.
Its earliest board of directors were – Sir Cowasjee Jehangir, Sir Sassoon David, Ratanjee Tata, Sir Frederick Leigh Croft, Khetsety Khiasey, Lalubhai Samaldas, Gordhandas Khattau, Ramnarain Hurnundrai, Noordin Ebrahim and Jenarrayen Hindoomull Dani.
Post World War II, the bank set up its first overseas branch in London in the year 1946. Subsequently, the branches were also opened in Paris, Kenya, Singapore, Aden, Osaka, Uganda, Tanganyika, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Nigeria and New York. National Bank of Southern Yemen incorporated Bank of India’s branch in Yemen together with those of all the other banks in the country and which is now renowned as National Bank of Yemen. The bank opened the representative office in Shenzhen and Vietnam. The bank fully owns a subsidiary in Auckland (New Zealand) and Uganda. With its key products i.e. Commercial banking, Retail banking, Mortgages, Private banking, Credit cards, etc. it earned a net income of Rs. 6089.22 crore in 2016.
The bank aims at providing superior banking facilities right from the retail customers and the small establishments to the corporate houses. It has been the first one to come up with a fully computerized branch cum ATM facility.
Job Prospects in Bank of India – Banking Jobs – IBPS Recruitment

The recruitment is done through the common written exams conducted by IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) for the posts of Probationary Officers (PO)/Management Trainee, Clerks and Specialist Officers.
- Probationary Officers: This cadre of officers keep a check on the working of the branch of a bank, including passing of cheques, marketing of bank products, evaluating loan proposals, etc.
- Clerks: They perform the bank activities, including receiving and paying of cash, opening and closing of accounts, imparting information regarding the bank services to the customers.
- Specialist Officers: These include IT officers, Marketing officers, Chartered Accountant, Agricultural Field officers, Rajbhasha Adhikari, HR, Law officers, Technical officers and Financial Executive. These form an important part of a bank and has specific roles to perform.
The exams conducted for these posts are IBPS PO exam, IBPS Clerk exam and IBPS Specialist Officer exam.
Other than the above-mentioned posts, if there are vacancy openings for any other position then the bank notifies about it on its website and accordingly invites applications and conducts interviews at its own level. These posts can be of Office Assistants, Attendants, Security Officers, Counselors and Medical Consultants.
Eligibility Criteria for Bank of India Recruitment – Selection Procedure
The candidate must be a citizen of India and must pass the IBPS exam, the minimum qualification for which is graduation. A specialization may or may not be required depending upon the post for which the candidate is applying. The age of the candidate should be between 20-28/30 years (relaxation in the case of the upper age limit for SC/ST/OBC). The IBPS score is valid for one year from the date of declaration of result.
After this, the candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their IBPS scores. These candidates are further called for the next round of the hiring process, which usually includes a common interview/ document verification conducted by IBPS. After the final selection, the list of the candidates along with the relevant information is made available to the bank and then further the offer cum appointment letters are sent to the respective candidates.
